Behaviour in the rain
Posted: 08/07/2009 by tortoise7

Hi
What sort of behaviour do you see your tortoise/s do when it rains? The reason I ask is that when it rains I come home from work to find Keya & Molly out in the garden wet and cold and just in places that they don't normally go to. Usually any drop in the temps and they run straight under their lamps. Their normal logic?? to keep warm goes out of the window. It would be interesting to hear others experiences
Thanks
Jane

Hi Jane,

Mine are the same, they love going out in the rain. In the wild they would no doubt make the most of any heavy down-pour to replenish water supplies. Have you ever noticed them sipping water off of the grass/plants at all?

Hi Darren

Do yours stay out and get really cold? mine go into a corner of the garden, well Molly does, Keya goes and hides under the grass. Yes I have read and seen the torts sipping a drink, fascinating isn't it. I guess it just because they look so cold wet and miserable that I wondered if anyone else's torts do the same.

Hi Jane,

Usually only a couple fail to make their way back to the greenhouse to warm up again and have to be taken indoors at night.

Hope you're well
