Hi,

That's absolutely fine. There is usually a slight variation in the incubator temperatures, as there would be in the wild.

What incubator are you using?

Hi

I have a couple of questions for anyone breeding tortoises.  My 5 year old Hermann tortoise Pebbles has laid 3 eggs, one hatched on Monday with a large egg sac attached and unfortunately died within the 24 hours, I was heartbroken as he/she was perfect and so cute.  What could I have done to prevent the little tort dying if at all?

Second question is I was trying to candle the other egg laid at the same time and in doing so slightly cracked the shell, it hasn't broken the surface but I am worried sick that I've either killed any potential baby inside or have destroyed the egg's sterility - help please??

Thank you so much

Jenny

Hi Jenny

So sorry to hear about your loss I have had the same problems when my Herman's started laying.don't be too hard on yourself because 5 years old seems a little bit early for success but it does happen. Just keep your fingers crossed for the other 2 and try not to handle the eggs once placed in the incubator.I have in the past kept a couple alive when they had a sac still attached by placing them in a shallow dish with tissue under them and kept moist with tepid water and drops of water on their beaks but not guaranteed to always work .  Best of luck and don't be too disheartened .I have had a total of 32 successful hatchlings in the last 5 years but there has been a few losses as well
Hoping this helps
