Barney has VERY long toenails, should I be trimming these or is this a job for the vet or should I be leaving well alone??

Personally - I'd recommend you take her along to a good vets initially, there's a recommended vet list here:-

Most vets are pretty good - so if you make any enquiries whilst they are doing it you'll have a better idea what to do if becomes necessary again.
