Hatchling Housing
Posted: 15/06/2009 by Nicole

Hi
I am giving some thought to preparing a tortoise table for our hatchlings due at the end of next month. We are not so good at DIY - so are looking to buy are pre-built one. I spotted some large indoor rabbit cages and wondered if there were any advantages/disadvantages in using this as a tortoise table? What does TPG think? Your advice would be most appreciated as, with luck, we will need to house 7 hatchlings.
Many thanks
Nicole

Hi Nicole,

I've used the small rabbit/guinea pig enclosure here, the 1.2m model (which I believe is the largest). They are absolutely fine; have a cage over the top which is convenient to hang the lamp from, are easy to clean and would be OK in the short-term. If you're looking to keep them for the long-term, personally I'd look to provide something a bit bigger for them to grow into.

Fingers crossed for you eggs:-)

Thanks Darren, thats really helpful. I also thought it seems quite a good idea particularly like you mentioned that there is somewhere to hang the lamp from. I also have children so I figure the cage is good to keep little hands away.
I have been wondering....at what point do you transfer the hatchling from the incubator to the table? Gosh this is all such a new experience for me. It is very exciting but also lots to learn in the process! Thanks for you help.

Hi Nicole,

Once mine have completely hatched, I always give them a warm bath to ensure they are hydrated then place them straight in the tortoise table.

Look out for a little pip in the shell of the egg - this will be the first sign and is easily missed. The tortoise may take several days to hatch once it has pipped the egg, whilst it finishes absorping it's egg-sac. It's very important to let the tortoise hatch out itself, despite the temptation to fiddle and have a look:-)
