Grass

Hi

Can you tell me please if tortoises can / should eat grass??

I bought some 'grazing, wild flower seed' from E Bay and planted it. However once it grew all I got was a load of grass and a few clover looking things. I e mailed the seller and he told me that a tortoises diet should consist of 50% grass which I find hard to believe. Is he right or is he just trying to fob me off??

Thanks

Julie

Hi Julie
Tortoises can and often will graze on grass but it should not be offered as part of their diet. Am I right in thinking that this is for Alfie, your spur thigh?
Iberas should be fed on a high fibre, low protein diet. The best diet for Alfie would consist of a variety of mixed weeds e.g. Dandelion, Clover, Vetch, Wild Mallow e.tc.
See our caresheet below

Herbiseed “med tortoise mix” is a good weed mix and can be obtained at

Hope this helps

Thank you very much Steph.

I have e mailed the bloke back but to be honest I think I will probably get another rude reply but I wanted to let him know as he is obviously feeding his tortoise mostly grass.
