Bay Plastics

Hi All

After my previous thread "Greenhouse Setups" can anyone tell me the exact name of the polycarbonate product that lets uv filter through it. There are so many on the Bay Plastics website and they all seem to give uv protection so I don't want to order the wrong thing.

Hi Rachel

It's under Perspex Acrylic Sheets and then Sunbed Grade Acrylic.  Here's the link to the page if it works: http://www.plasticstockist.com/index.cfm?page=cHJvZHVjdHM=&sector=MTY=&group=MzI=

Unfortunately I haven't ordered any as yet, but you could always contact them and ask how much UVB the different thicknesses let through.  I think they are willing to answer any questions.

Helen.

I bought some acrylic from Bay Plastics last year for my coldframe and as promised it does let UVB through it.  My rough tests with a solarmeter says it allows about 60% of the UVB through it.  I think it was worth doing, my Hermanns do like it in the coldframe and at least they get some UV in there now.

There is also C and A Building Plastics who are London based.  They sell UV transmitting acrylic as well including some very thin material which is bendy and might be used to a make a sun tunnel.  C and A were going to charge me a lot for delivery beause I'm in Scotland so I didn't use them.  If anyone has a larger project they might be best.  www.cabp.co.uk

I didn't find any actual polycarbonate that is UV transmitting, only acrylic.  If there was suitable polycarb it would be worth trying because its got better thermal properties.

Thanks very much for that, Ozric -- really useful information!
