Hi Jane,

I wasn't sure about ferns, but I just found this message from Martin Dann on the Tortoise Nutrition site:

"Most, if not all ferns, are toxic. They contain carcinogens and some contain a substance that destroys Vitamin B complex."

I also found this: "The fresh plant contains thiaminase, an enzyme that robs the body of its vitamin B complex. In small quantities this enzyme will do no harm to people eating an adequate diet that is rich in vitamin B, though large quantities can cause severe health problems." That was obviously written with people in mind, but as Dryopteris is a fairly common fern, I guess it is best to err on the side of caution and not feed it or put it in the enclosure.

Hi Nina
It's purpose was for shade only as it grows so profusely, but like you say it is better to be on the safe side, so I shall dig it up.. another plant for my Mum & Dad's garden Lol. I had seen it in several photo's of enclosure's, but something was just niggling inside of me each time I looked at it. Glad I asked the question because the information you gave was very interesting Thank you

Thats the same as the ones we have removed before building a new enclosure. I had it ID's as one of the toxic ones.

Really glad I asked, I would have never forgiven myself if Molly had been taken sick or worse. I have removed it already and replaced it with a nice laviteria bush, much much better. We do get these not so good ideas from somewhere don't we. I do feel I should have known better though.
Anyway folks, thanks for your advice
Jane
