Mixing Torts????
Posted: 14/04/2009 by kohimagirl

Hi,

I know that different breeds of tortoises cannot live together, but can Med Spur Thigh's live with other breeds of Spur Thigh's please?

Huge thanks.

Hi - this is not soemthing we would recommend - Ibera males can be especially aggressive, female Iberas can cope with this, but it would cause stress and damage to others, and  you would not want them to breed.  Some subsepcies are also more sensative to temperature and environment, especially the North Africans :)

Hope this helps

Thanks for your reply. My Med Spur Thigh is female and I am desperate to have another tort, which is why I wondered if other breeds of spur thigh would be OK. I would have another female, as I wouldnt want my Annabel to be pestered by a male and she is very docile and laid back which made me think about another.

So, if I were to buy another (or rehome) it would HAVE to be a Med Spur Thigh female would it? Also would a baby be ok with a 8yr old?

Thanks again,

Hi

There are a number of different variations of Med Spur thighs - the main two being testudo graeca ibera and testudo gracea graeca.  Within TGG there are further different varieties, depending on where they originate from.  If you are considering getting a companion for your tortoise, if you are able to post some clear photos on the forum, we will be able to ID her for you.  Tortoises cant be accurately sexed until they are around  3 - 4 years old, so although you may find baby tortoises for sale which have been incubated to be females, there are no guarantees that you will not end up with a male!  Depending on how big your current tortoise is too, you would need to consider the difference in size between them, but I wouldnt recommend putting a hatchling or very young tortoise in with an 8 yr old.

I hope this helps

Hi,

If you are interested in rehoming a tortoise from the TPG, you can download the rehoming application form -- just click on Rehoming in the left-hand column on this page, and you will find a link to the rehoming application form. You can then specify approximate age, species, and sex of the tortoise you would like to rehome. When you are ready, you can send it in, and I'll write back with full instructions on how our system works (or if you'd like to know this before hand, just email me at nina@tortoise-protection-group.org.uk and I'll let you know now).
