Bad shop alert
Posted: 10/04/2009 by minniechops

Hi,

I had the misfortune to visit a bad reptile shop near Boscombe. I have two horsefield torts and when I told him they live on a tort table he said 'well you didn't get that from here, we would never recommend them'. He explained that tortoises are best kept in a glass fronted vivarium. He also said as did the care sheet he gave me that my torts need 20% fruit in their diet and to feed them cabbage and brocolli the rest of the time. Lastly, the info sheet he gave me said it was probably best to not hiberate your tortoise, too risky.

Needless to say I did not buy anything from them.

Oh Dear Zoe!! Yet another one to our list!! Would you feel comfortable in printing off our care sheet and handing it to him or placing it by the torts, or post it through the letter box when shop is closed?
Let us know how you get on

I agree with Viv -- this sounds like a particularly bad one! Could you send me the name of the pet shop and the address, privately if possible? You can send it to
contactus@tortoise-protection-group.org.uk
or to
nina@tortoise-protection-group.org.uk

Many thanks!

Nina

Hi Zoe, When you e-mail the address could you also scan the care sheet he gave you or send it to our PO box:

 The Tortoise Protection Group
P.O. Box 1484
Oxford

Many thanks

I will sort out the address and name and send it to you. I don't like near the shop, it's about 80 miles away. Was visiting parents. I will scan the info and email you that also. If it was not for this site then I probably would have believed every word he said. All baby torts should come with details about this web site.

Click and drag me down to the editor OH Bless, you've got us all blushing now! I don't think any of us thought we would ever end up doing something like this ,but these little guys get into your heart and we all want to do what we can to ensure that as many tortoises get as best a life as they can. And who would have thought there was so much to learn about something you just 'stick in the garden' Click and drag me down to the editor.

Many thanks for your help, have a wonderful Easter,

Elaine
