Plant ID on Kirkies photo's
Posted: 19/03/2009 by Row

Hi,

Please can you let me know whether a plant on 1 of Kirkies Herman pics is an edible weed?

Its on the 5th line of pics, last 1 in the row and it's the 1 of Daisy.  There's a plant that looks like a stingy nettle but with puprle flower.

I've seen loads around just want to know if mine can eat it?

Thanks,

Row

Hi Row,

That's a dead nettle (lamium), and they are fine for tortoises.

Hi Row, you can also get this dead nettle with white flowers too, which is also edible!

Hi Row,

As its already been ID'ed I can only confirm that it is red dead nettle and it is everywhere at the moment!

You can tell the dead nettle species from the true nettles because they have a square shaped stem. As you can see Daisy loves them!

A word of caution, there is a plant very similar in appearance to the red dead nettle called the Common Hemp Nettle (Galeopsis Tetrahit) which is toxic.
The hemp nettle leaves are very rough to the touch whereas dead nettles (Lamium species) are very soft.

Hi,

Thanks veryone!  I only knew of the dead nettle with white flowers and can't find these at the moment. Another tasty weed for my torts, they're gonna love me even more now!

 Thanks again,

Row

Hello, my mum grows deadnettle in he garden. Originally it was an ornamental plant from a garden centre but it has now turned itself into a weed and pops up everywhere. Is that suitable for tortoises too? Thank you, Katie
