Lime Stone Flour
Posted: 14/01/2009 by Row

Hi,

Do you just put lime stone lour in a dish and leave in the enclosure or should I sprinkle over food?  They already have nutrobol on food and cuttlefishbones which they don't really touch.

Thanks,

Row

Hi Row,

You can do various things with limestone flour, but the latest thinking is that it shouldn't be given at the same time as Nutrobal. I sprinkle limestone flour on wet food on days that I don't use Nutrobal, and I also make a hard little cake out of it by mixing it with a bit of water until it's the consistency of wet clay, and then I make it into little squares or balls and let it harden. Some people just leave the flour in a dish as well.
Some torts don't like fresh cuttlefishbone (mine doesn't), but will greedily eat it if it's been left out in the rain and elements for several weeks (until it is beginning to go all green and horrible {g}. I leave a cuttlefishbone in the enclosure all the time.

Hi Nina,

Sorry if I sound stupid!!!  I only feed my torts every other day and their food has nutrobol on so when it isn't their food day should I just leave a dish of the limestone flour in their enclosure then?

Thanks,

Row

LOL -- not stupid at all! I feed my tort six days a week, and so was thinking along those lines, but yes, I think it would be fine to leave a dish in their enclosure. That way it is their choice as to whether they eat it. I do find that the little limestone flour cakes (see previous message) are nice, and it means the limestone flour tends to stay in one place and not get walked through and tracked all over the place, but try it loose (lots of people do it this way) and see how it goes.
