Tortoise Confidence
Posted: 05/01/2009 by Row

Hi!

It's me agian!!!!  This probably sounds silly but how can you build a tortoise's confidence up? Twiglet is very very shy and timid and doesn't seem to want to explore.  I'm not sure whether she is scared of Tetley or whether it's just her character.

Does anyone have any tips on how to make her a little more brave?

Thanks Row.

Little torts often lack confidence.

This is just natural self preservation.

I try to put seperate mounds of food out to ensure that they don't feel over whelmed by other torts. Well established groups just get stuck in after some time.

As long as she she is moving around comfortably, not too scared to feed and get into the water, you are doing fine.

Try not too worry about it too much. He will be more confident with time.

It's easy with a dog, you pat them and give them a biscuit = friend for life. I like o keep my torts quite independant and as true to nature as I possibly can. I try to avoid hand feeding but hand feeding does definately help with worming and other medical necessities. So there is always two sides to the story

Thanks for the reasurrance.  I feed them both seperately as Tetley will bite Twiglet if fed together.  Twiglet doesn't come out of her bedroom unless physically moved and does not bathe independently.

I've only had Twiglet since the end of October. Tetley's been with me since the end of July and he is just so confident and comes galloping up to me when he hears me enter the room!

If anyone has any more tips please let me know.

Tetley biting Twiglet wont help much, you are doing right feeding them seperate. Is there a big difference in their size? Where did you get Twiglet from? Many pet shops or online suppliers keep tortoises in over crouded conditions, this may have dented Twiglets confidence to begin with and a little nip from Tetley has just put her on her back foot. It is still very early days in a tortoises life, so provide plenty of hides and be patient. There is nothing like a sunny day to make things better!

You are doing really well by these tortoises and I'm sure it will pay off in time.

Thanks Elaine I know Im probably worrying about silly things. Probably can tell I'm a new owner!!!  Twiglet came from an online supplier (really wish I'd found this site 1st) she had cuts on her neck when I got her which I'm guesing are from other Torts but who knows.

Tetley probably a good inch and half bigger and does tend to clamber all over Twiglet as if she's not there.

Pleanty of hiding places in their table -  logs, plant pots and bedroom.  I'll be patient and can't wait till those summer days!!!!

Thanks and sorry for all the questions.
