Rehoming a tortoise
Posted: 17/05/2017 by nicola.reetz

I have just joined this website as we are looking to re home a tortoise. We would like to apply to re home a tortoise however it is asking for photos of the enclosure etc. We have not yet built the enclosure and are waiting to see if we can find the right tortoise before we build it. We have lots of space in our garden and a few sheds with electricity to house in the winter months, so we can definitely provide the right home, is it not possible to sort out the re homing before we build the enclosure, just worried we may build it and not find the right tortoise! If and when it gets sorted the pictures can be sent before we collect! Thanks

Hello,

You need to address this via the TPG Rehoming page.

The idea is I think, that when you have an acceptable enclosure & housing, you will be offered a tortoise of the species of your choice.

What is "the right tortoise" ?

Hi Tom,

I'm in a similar situation as the person above. I would like to give a home to a needy tortoise and we are in the process of redoing our garden and therefore it can be redone to meet a tortoises needs.

For those of us looking to home a tortoise for the first time, the issue with setting everything up prior to applying to re-home a tortoise is that surely the previous keeper will have some equipment they'd be willing to sell/give with the tortoise (such as an indoor tortoise table)? It seems a waste to buy everything new/second hand before knowing you'll even be re-homing a tortoise, when that tortoise probably already has some/most of the required equipment.

The further worry is that, what if you set everything up (and incur all the cost and effort that involves) and then you're told no or there aren't any tortoises of the right breed that need re-homing in your area?

I understand that the protocol is in place to ensure the safety of the tortoises but surely a re-homing can be agreed in principle on the condition of the standards being met, no?

Best,

Poppy

Hello Poppy,

You will need to address this with the re-homers. I am not involved with re-homing at all. It is listed on the Forum so that people who have missed the "TPG Rehoming / ..." box can be informed where to look.

Hi all,

I sent off my photos, cover letter etc to Dover street last year (I worked it out-it was 9months ago) I would like to rehome a tortoise, I also sent an email asking if TPG had received my inquiry 2 weeks afterwards. Unfortunately I haven't heard anything back.
My tortoise hibernates outside, she's over 60 and has recently reappeared 😄
So Last week I sent another email with the names of tortoises I'd like to rehome.

I finally worked out I think! That after sending in your photos etc that you then email TPG with names and locations of ones you think would suit.
I'm really hoping to hear back in one way or another, I intialy was told by Tom the forum isn't for this but having looked through lots of posts  recently people are advertising to rescue tortoises. I really appreciate this is run by volunteers but as yet haven't seen any posts of people who have been accepted.
Tom you do seem the man in the know, what's going on?
I rescue rabbits and other animals but am surprised not to have heard anything back when there are so many tortoises on the rehoming page needing a new home.

Kind regards
Helen
just seen your post tom that your nothing to do with rehoming but is there a telephone number that you know of or can see that I'm missing?

I've only found this Post & the preceding one by chance Helen, you need to start a new Post if you need The Forum again rather than tag on to someone else's.

I agree that the situation is unsatisfactory, there are well over 100 torts listed (as you imply) & this is the perfect time of the year to move them on.

I don't know who the current re-homers are, let alone have a phone no.. I have raised this matter with an admin' in the past & this time I will expect some action.
9mths with no reply is ridiculous ! I'm assuming that you joined the TPG & followed the protocol.

Hi tom,

I did follow everything on how to rehome, I've seen an email on this forum 'darren@' so am going to mail him directly next week (waiting to see if I get a reply from last weeks mail to TPG) first)

By tagging onto the original post I was hoping Poppy would mail me back saying what she's done and that she got a response and was successful.
It is frustrating but hopefully something will happen this year.
I know you've said to many people not to advertise directly on this forum but I'm thinking perhaps if I said what I wanted and more importantly what I can provide, I can give a tortois a home.

Regards
Helen

Please don't try to shoot the messenger Helen.

I've stated I'll take the matter up again. I intend to report any progress [or not] in a New Post under the "Re-homing" heading. Don't hold your breath !!
