Terrapin homes needed
Posted: 29/12/2008 by tpgNina

The fate of terrapins can be a sad one, as people often buy these turtles when small, without realising how big they can get and how important it is to have the right aquatic habitat for them. For this reason they often come up for rehoming -- especially at this time of year.

As many of you know, the TPG does not have the facilities to offer a temporary home to these animals, and so we are not able to offer a re-homing service for them, but the British Chelonia Group offers an excellent re-homing service and we would encourage anyone who feels they can offer a good home to a terrapin -- especially a red-eared slider or a yellow-bellied slider -- to contact Mary Datson of the BCG on marytort@hotmail.com or
Mary Datson, Stocklist Officer, BCG, P.O.Box 1176 Chippenham, Wilts. SN15 1XB -- as she almost always has RES and YBS that need new homes.

In regards to terrapin rehoming. I work for an animal collection used for education purposes. At the moment we only have 1 pond suitable for terrapins, in our South American exhibit. If there are any South American species available for rehoming we would hopefully be able to offer a home

Hi Jp07,

That is really good to know, and thanks for posting it. Can I ask what your animal collection is called and where it is? I think Mary Datson from the BCG (see her contact details in the first post) would be very interested to hear from you, and you could also contact Tamie Milne, who is the re-homing officer for the Tortoise Trust, as they often get terrapins in. Her email is:
tamie.milne@btinternet.com
It is always a problem to find good homes for terrapins and other aquatic turtles, so I'm sure they will be grateful to hear from you.

Its a college, Im reluctant to name it (although there arent too many in Yorkshire) just incase we get inundated with rescues which has happened in the past & we've struggled to deal with them as we dont have much space for tortoises. but yeah, I'll email the 2 contacts reccommended. We really only have space at the moment for 1 or 2 terrapins and as Isaid S American species are what we need for the exhibit

Hi thanks for letting us know,  we tend to concentrate on tortoises, but occasionally we do get asked to rehome turtles we normally refer them on to other organisations that have contacts to get them rehomed, we will keep your name on file incase any come up in the future.

Hey, I was wondering if you have any terrapins left. I have a tank that is suitable for one, or two depending on how large these ones are, or how big they'll grow. I am very interested in rehoming one. Thanks. Beth.

Hi, I have a terrapin, Henrietta, which was rescued from school 22 years ago. She is quite large now and I feel that she does not always get the care and attention that she deserves, although she does is not a demanding pet and just loves to sunbathe. I am keen for her to be re homed with someone who will appreciate her. Are you still interested in re-homing a terrapin?

I have 3 lovely terripins that i would like to give to someone who has more time to look after them as the cleaning out is more demanding than i thought and since me and partner split running house with 3 kids i do struggle to keep up with cleaning tank out myself all time....michelle
