Grow Lights
Posted: 15/01/2017 by avesmon

I've put two small grow lights on my tortoise's cage, but now I'm wondering if they are harmful to him or not.  Each light is 7pcs (red (620-630nm 5pcs), blue(460nm 2pcs). Can someone help me?

Hello,

You have provided very little background info..

What age & species is it ? Where did you get it & were you given any advice re. lighting ?

The TPG recommend "Megaray UVB bulbs" for lighting during winter for non hibernating species. The bulbs provide both heat & light & need a dome reflector.

OK - so you live in Phoenix,  have a 4'x3' 'table' & a UVB light & basking light. You want to grow lettuce in the soil in the table.

Firstly lettuce is not good for torts' & secondly any plants would be walked on & eaten b4 they developed. I'd get rid of the grow lights. Grow suitable plants separately.

Megaray gives heat & light & is by far the best UVB bulb, a dome reflector is needed.

You could hibernate it Nov to March [fridge method].
I assume it lives outside in warmer weather.

You are welcome to click on "The Tortoise /.." box & print off a Caresheet. Also print off the excellent TPG hibe' info..

Is that helpful ?
