In Germany and need to stock food and substrate
Posted: 08/09/2016 by Emkay19

I hope that I can get a little advice....

We have 4 Greek tortoises, 3 years old. The German government has recently issued instructions for citizens to store sufficient food and water for up to 10 days should an emergency occur (God forbid). Not forgetting pets of course.  Our cats are easy though I need a little advice for our tortoises.

Their current diet is only fresh organic salads and weeds (dandelion etc).  We have always been advised against any dried foods. In the even of an emergency, which type of prepared dry food would be most suitable?  I could give them a little from time to time so they are used to it.

The other question is, what kind of substrate would be best to store?  In summertime, they are outdoors in a huge enclosure though when the weather turns, they come indoors into a very big tortoise table. Indoors we now use a natural earth mixed with sand. We can't buy the earth in bags here to store as it comes from various farmers and nothing available in bags without chemicals. What kind of pre bagged manufactured substrate is best suitable? Ideally not very heavy.

I'm more than happy to order from the UK.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi,
Topsoil is fine, you cam collect this from the wild if there is no other alternative. Best to ensure it isn't collected from areas where other pets (dogs/cats etc) frequent

Thank you Darren.  It's very difficult to even get topsoil here and store it so hoped for a suggestion as to another manufactured substrate that is recommended.

Any advice would be very gratefully received.

Hello,

I would dismiss the German government's advice re. 10 days with the contempt it deserves. If you keep them outside then, by implication, you have topsoil.

They can hibe. from the end of October.

Regards,
Tom
