Help needed setting up
Posted: 20/08/2016 by Tomandtortie

Hi

My son has wanted a tortoise for many years, he is 12 tomorrow and we have said he is now responsible enough to look after one (with help for mum!!) We have been researching their care and found the TPG site by far the the best, however, we are confused when it comes to the indoor enclosure. Vivariums seem to be a no go area and the table top enclosures you can buy seem too small for an adult tortoise(Tom hopes to rehome an adult male tortoise once he's all set up) can any one give us advice on the best and correct way to start caring for what has been along awaited pet....thanks!

Hello Tom

We are hoping to find a Hermann's tortoise, male, between 5 and 10 years old.       Julie

At that age it will need a 15sqm wood-sided enclosure, plus a large house with a polycarbonate roof.

It can be 'emptied out' naturally in late Sept. to October & hibernated.
In spring all torts need 'help' 'til the weather warms up. A greenhouse or polytunnel are invaluable.

Regards,
Tom

Thank you for the info. We have had badgers through our garden recently so had intended to bring tortie indoors at night and through the winter, Is this acceptable?
