Too late to hibernate
Posted: 24/07/2016 by L Quick

Hi, i need a bit of advice!

When i bought my Hermans Tortoise i was told not to hibernate for at least 5 years. It seems people are commonly told this, but looking into it is not necessary.

He is now 9 and has not been hibernated. I know hibernation is best and i want to do it starting this winter, but is he now too old to adjust to this pattern?

sorry if it is a silly question. just the usual first hibernation fears i guess!

Thanks in advance

Hello,

Nothing to fear. I suggest that you 'wind it down' naturally outside. Observe it carefully in October. Depending on the season & which part of the country you live, you will see the signs when it is ready.

Regards,
Tom
