Hermann tortise
Posted: 20/05/2016 by Klid

Hi can some one please tell me if this is normal.

My tortise is a rescue tortise, when I first had him he feed well and moved a bit.
Now about 5 months later he just retreats to his shelter and doesn't eat and only once to sleep. I bathe him daily to encourage drinking and waking and he has a basking lamp and uv lighting. Is this normal for a Hermann tortise ?? I know he's had a bit of a traumatic life as spent most of his beginnings in a very small enclose a small fish tank hence we have him. He appears to be healthily and lives in a vivarium inside and has an out door area all too himself when the weather is good for to go outside, but all he does is find shelter and sleep.

Hello

Vivs are not good for torts.
Click on "The Tortoise /..." box for some good advice. Change the setup & come back if you still have probs., but provide temps' etc.
Outside - when torts have warmed up to optimum temp' they seek shade, it's normal.
Provide a waterproof house in the outside enclosure, put some soft straw in it, & (depending on age & your location) it will be ok 'til hibernation time in mid to late October.

Regards,
Tom
