Can my 10 month tortoise survive outside alone
Posted: 08/05/2016 by talou12

Hello,

My ten month old Spur thigh has somehow managed to escape her outdoor pen. We have been putting her outside now it is mild and bringing her in at night. She has been missing since 5pm Friday night. We have a lot of shrubs and shade/hiding places in our garden so she will have places to hide and food sources and I'm hoping she has hidden herself away somewhere. But she is not used to being out alone and she is very young. Can she survive at this age? I am devastated and keep hoping to see her plod across the garden. Not sure if this is likely though? We have looked for her extensively but no luck yet. :( Many thanks

Hello,

Yes no problem at all, even though temp's are set to drop later in the week.

It's good you have the sense to put it out. It's just a matter if making sure the pen is flat to the ground, when you find it.

One of my clients had 2 hatchlings in July last year, one escaped in September,  whilst at her parents when she was on holiday. It was found in April in a rare warm spell.
So aged 3 months, it hibernated from October to April emerging at 9 months old.

Regards,
Tom
