Baby Hermann Tortoise
Posted: 15/04/2016 by chlobe

Hey there
I got my Hermann tortoise on Monday and so far she has been good ( except the odd escape, she cant anymore so do not worry)
She is a baby and i am constantly worried about her.
especially when it comes to feeding her. i know she likes cucumber but i have to hold it for her so she can eat. but i dont know what else to give her.
My problem is that i have read a hundred things on what to give her yet to the point it is contradicting the previous thing i have read.
Also my Recent worry is that i have got too high of bulb for her. i got her 125W Solar Glo UV Light heat from Exo Terra. as past two days she hasn't been active. and today she is just staying in her log. I gave her a bath earlier and then some food (she eats at around 3pm).
Anything to calm my nerves would be appreicated. Ive not even had her for a week and i love her like my own. Just want to make sure i am doing everything i possibly can for her.
Thank you in advance!

Hello,

Where did you get the tortoise & where was it bred ? [see box 10 of your A10 Certificate].

What is the distance between the bottom of the UVB bulb & the top of your torts' carapace ?

Regards,
Tom

Here is what it says on the certificate.
and there is 18/20 inches from the bulb to the floor. ( nearst i could work out as i had to use a ruler not a measuring tape)
also she has gone to sleep again in her corner and it is only half 4!

It was 'bred' in Serbia.

What is the name/ address in box 1 of the Certificate ? Is it the same as the person you bought it from ?
What is the temperature below the bulb at tort' level, centrally ?
What is the weight of your tort to the nearest gram ?

Can you send photos of your setup please ?

Please answer all ?s it will help me advise you.

She was bought from Jollyes ( i know now you shouldnt really buy from these types of stores )
She weighs 75g.

I regret the delay.

Zoological International is "The Tortoise Centre" they are big importers, who supply pet shops & sell online. Best avoided.

Jolly's have a bad reputation - did they supply a Caresheet ? As you say - also best avoided.

Click on "The Tortoise /" box & print off a Caresheet. Keep in touch.

I wasn't their when she was picked up from Jolleys , it was my partners parents and all they got given was the receipt and the certificate.
I had to go away for a couple of days and my partner looked after her and she seemed to be eating alot more! however i still have the trouble with her sleeping alot. Also thank you for helping, and i do regret how we got her but at the same time i do not as i have a wonderful baby tortoise who i want to give the best life for as much as i can, just wish it was done differently.

Keep the receipt from Jollyes in case of any problems, so that any vet bills can be claimed from them.

I'm not trying to worry you, not all imported torts have problems, though sadly many do.
It is scandalous that it was sold without at least a basic Caresheet, but it sums up Jollyes. Good pet shops do not sell pets.

Tortoises of any age do sleep a lot. You have the TPG Caresheet now. Let us know if you have problems.
It will soon be able to spend a lot of time outside, which will be of great benefit.
