Tortoise advice
Posted: 02/04/2016 by janebellhughes@hotmail.com

I have just purchased a tortoise that is three years old, he is pretty active a couple of times a day and he comes out for a wonder, he was never bathed by the previous owner just shell cleaned etc as they told me he climbs into his in house water. ...I have never seen him do this...should I bath him, I don't want cause him any stress but don't want him to become dehydrated? ?

Also he does not have a basking lamp...should I get one of these?,when he sleeps he goes inside his log house,  just a couple of queries from new tortoise owner.
I have had gary for two weeks now.
Thanks
Jane

I think it's a horsefield.I got a basking light today and he's gone straight under it. He is in a vavarium though so I worry about the heat, am only going to put it on part time..should I drill holes into the wood to allow air flow??

OK I was making sure it wasn't a 'difficult' species. If you post pics I can identify it.

Yes place it in water daily deep enough to put it's head under water, if it wishes.

Viv's are unsuitable, but for now leave the door open 15cm, at the end away from the light.

Click on "The Tortoise / …." box, to find lots of info., including Care sheets.

ps Check that your bulb is a good one, if it cost less than £20 it's not good.
