First time hibernation
Posted: 29/03/2016 by kristina.wootton@yahoo.co.uk

Hello everyone,

I was wondering whether anyone could give me some advice.

I have a horsefield Tortoise called Dino, Dino was 6 months old when I brought her in February last year so she is currently 1 year old and 7 months. I was advised to not hibernate her for at least a year to make sure she was healthy etc, and basically I want some advice as I'd like to hibernate her this years winter, as it would be my first time I would like to know what weight Dino should be how much she would loose in the first week or two into hibernation that is normal when is the best month to start winding her off food etc how long for and how long should I hibernate her for as it's her first time for her age etc basically I would like to know everything I need to know what method is the best fridge box? If fridge where is best to get one from as I have asked my local vet for information and she told me there is no need to hibernate her but I don't think that's the way I want to make sure I keep Dino following what nature intended and give her the best in life.

So any advice would help alot thank you

Hello Kristina,

Quite right to hibe' it, although many vets say "don't."
It is not possible to provide a weight chart, as torts grow at different rates. Weigh it weekly & keep accurate records. Refer to these to help monitor it's health.

I'd hibe' it in Jan' & Feb' so wind down in the 2nd half of Dec.
Add a month in 2017/'18 & so on up to 5mth.

Click on "The Tortoise / …." box for the TPG advice & cross reference with the Tort. Trust info. You have plenty of time to read up.
At that age (in Dec.) a wind down of 2 weeks is ample, in my opinion, increase as it grows.
"Lucky Reptile" fridges are said to be good.

Regards,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Thank you for your advice, yes I have made sure I have enough time to read up so I can make it as smooth as possible without me stressing so much.
