Lighting and general help needed for beginner!
Posted: 22/01/2016 by J. Thomas

Dear all, first sorry if I am repeating old questions. I am hoping to get a hatchling spur thigh or Hermann  tortoise next month and plan to keep it indoors on a tortoise table until it is big enough to live in the garden/ shed during the summer months. Until then, which heating/ lighting system should I use?  I have done some research and think I am planning to go for a mega ray 100w combined uv/ heat bulb. Can these be used in any ceramic holder and are they the best to go for? Also, how would I go about using a timer with one of these?

On a more genral note,  would anyone recommend a Hermann or spur thigh as the best option for a complete beginner?

Any and all advice would be gratefully received (as well as any money saving tips on set up costs!) as as I want to make sure I provide a good home for a tortoise.

Hello,

Megaray is a good choice. Order a "Clamplamp" with it, discard the clamp & suspend at 90deg..

Either species, if a spur,' then it must be T.ibera.

Save money (on vet bills,) - be sure to buy from the TPG Breeders List, not from a Pet Trader.

Regards,
Tom
