I am looking into owning a tortoise and have read about keeping them indoors. I live in an apartment and have a balcony however there isn't any grass. 

Is having access to grass and the outdoors essential?

They need to live 'naturally' outside in Summer.

Some people keep them indoors, but it is unkind & stupid, they have no quality of life, & life expectancy is shortened substantially.

It's good that you have the sense to ask.
