Scottish Breeders

Hi All,

I am looking to either rehome or purchase a tortoise (or possibly two) as close to Glasgow as possible, although I will travel a reasonable distance if required.

I have been lucky enough to have a tortoise before, many moons ago (20 + years) when my Dad found a Hermanns tortoise walking down a main road one day and stopped to "rescue" him before he got squished.  Timmy, as he was named, unfortunately didn't make it through his hibernation after many happy years in our family.

Currently I live with my two daughters (aged 10 and 12) a house rabbit (aged 6) and guinea pig (18 mths) who get access to the garden every day when the weather is suitable and if not out of their cage for at least 3 - 4 hours daily, a chinese dwarf hamster (2yrs) who again is out of his cage for at least 2 hours a day and last but not least our beautiful 3 yr cockapoo Lily who just thinks all the small furries as we call them are her babies, but knows she needs to sit and be gentle if she wants to interact with them and I promise she is never left unattended with them.  All our animals with exception of Lily are rescues/rehomed from various situations.

Whilst we are not currently set up for a tortoise, we are well aware of all the requirements for housing and food (more than happy to grow tortoise friendly flowers/weeds ourselves moving forward, we have the plot picked out in the garden already) having researched considerably in the past couple of years and we have ample outdoor space for days when the tortoise is able to bask in the sun (not as often in Scotland I fear as other parts in of the UK).  We also have suitable holiday accommodation already organised and used before for all the pets if required.

My daughters have been desperate for a tortoise each for some years now, however I have always refused to purchase from a pet shop or the likes of gumtree etc and we have never been in the right place at the right time to re home from the SSPCA and thats when I came across your website.  Now I know that you have advised on your rehoming part of the site that your require photos of the housing etc, but I wondered whether if a suitable "match" was made that I could potentially purchase the housing the tortoise(s) already has making it a bit less stressful for them to rehomed.

If you could let me know your thoughts and if you think we are suitable potential tortoise owners that would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hello,

Re-homed torts are usually adults, so outside housing is needed, (a min. 15 sqm enclosure). You need to discuss via the "TPG Rehoming" box.

If buying a hatchling, there is a list of breeders via the "Buying a Tort …….." box.
There may be a breeder near the West Coast Mainline who would meet you at a station.

Regards,
Tom
