Just starting out
Posted: 17/08/2015 by Camcole#1

Hi everyone,

This is the first time that my 8 year old son and I have posted on the forum. We are looking to set up home for a tortoise, preferably a Hermann adult. We have certain questions that we would like to get answers for that we cannot find in the ton of information that we have already read.

1. It states that a tortoise requires an indoor and outdoor area to live. Can this be an area outside that has a covered in section with the required heat lamps or does it have to be physically inside the house?

2. Is there a minimum size requirement for a Hermann tortoise house?

3. This may sound an obvious question, but what provision should be made for his care when on holiday. My son and I are very concerned at the level of care a tortoise requires and the suitability of someone to look after him?

An answer to these questions would be much appreciated and I am sure there will be many more. It is probably important to state that we live in the UK. Thanks

Hello,

1. "Indoor" means in a house or heated building, for in bad weather.

2. This depends on the size of the tortoise, about 60 x60cm for an adult, within an enclosure of at least 15sqm.

3. That is for you to arrange.

As you continue to read, hopefully the pieces of the puzzle will slot into place.
Making notes can be helpful.

Regards,
Tom
