Utter newb, basically seeking first tort advice.
Posted: 18/07/2015 by Spike

Hello! I'm a new person to this forum but hardly new to the website.

A little background info that may be useful -
My mum and I have been banging on about getting a tortoise each for years. We've always loved and been fascinated by them. We did a fair bit of research over time, and she wanted to get a Sulcata and myself a Redfoot. She loves how massive they can get, I've always loved the colour red. Basically. Anyways, we've been chatting about how to turn our spare shed into a great tortoise home but I've recently decided I don't think I had what it takes to look after a Redfoot (mostly because of the costs and the cold). We've been talking about it and looking into it for years but I think the time has come to just get on with things and as much as I love exotic animals, I'm just in the wrong country.

So I've been looking at getting either a Hermann, Spur-thighed or  Marginated tortoise instead. I'm wondering, of the three, which is the most curious and/or friendly? I'd love a tortoise that's happy to socialise with/not be scared of  humans (or at least me).
I've recently got all the bits and bobs I need minus lighting and the tortoise itself. Then after deciding the breed I want, it's off to travel and find a decent breeder (using the list from this very site, it seems)!

Would be wonderful if any of you experienced guys could enlighten me as to the personalities of these breeds.

Many thanks,
Spike.

Hello Spike,

It's good that you have taken a sensible, patient approach.

There is not a great difference in behaviour. Herms are by far the most attractive, with a lovely contrast of yellow & black.
Both spurs & marginated turn black with age.

Regards,
Tom

I think I've sold myself on a Hermann, the only issue I have now is finding a breeder. I've contacted a few from this website but none have got back to me. So my next question is, is there a season where they're common and easier to find?

Surprising, try them again.

Where are you based ?
The 'season' is here.
