egg problems again
Posted: 18/06/2015 by DougW

Hi Shelia  our Herman is once again in trouble with laying, this time she laid 8 eggs over a short period with none of the usually symptoms (restless, off food etc). She is now giving out the symptoms. Took her to vet but no more eggs show, she has had trouble every year and has been induced, even had an implant which worked for a short time.We are waiting for a referal to an exotic specialist in Bristol regarding a spey. She is not eating at all (or very very little). It seems unfair that she should have this trouble all the time, she is around 56 years old.

Any comments or advice would be welcome

Hi Tom

Have heard back from referal vets and Sheila has the procedure on Monday the 29th the vet who is operating ( from Bristol Zoological Soc) told me what to expect! Sounds a bit traumatic, and they will fit her with a feeding tube for medication etc for us to use over the several months of her recovery.
So here hoping all goes well for her.
Will keep you posted
Doug

Hello Doug,

It is more invasive than I imagined, I had naively expected micro surgery.

I suggest you think very carefully before going ahead.
Females do become unsettled for some days before laying, but it is a natural process & it may well be enjoyable, 'though it may not appear so to us.

Does Sheila live alone ?
Do you have a suitable laying area ?

Tom
