Horsefield female pregnant
Posted: 30/04/2015 by rwilkie

Hi I was wondering if I could get some advise I have a strong feeling that my female Horsefield is pregnant.  She has made several attempts to dig nesting sites in the last week but every time she abandons them, she is inside in the tortoise table with a nice big mound of substrate for her to dig in.  I have tried making the substrate drier, wetter, bigger, firmer, looser.  I am at a loss to what to do to help her.  I have contacted my local vet and they will xray her if I need it but I want to try and avoid having to do that.  This is the first time I have had this happen, I have never had tortoises fall pregnant and I need advise on how to make her feel comfortable to lay her eggs.  Please help.

Hello,

You have been busy changing the substrate. It needs to be fairly moist & very firm.
It is best to then stay well away, as gravid tort's need privacy in order to relax & lay.
How old is she & when was she last in contact with a male ?

Regards,
Tom

That's what I did. I followed the advise from this website. It was about a month ago. She has vet tomorrow. I don't know her age as we rescued her and another both meant to be female until I saw him mating with her. I believe from the size about 6-7 years old.

Well Lilos xray showed 2eggs but they are concerned they are too big for her to lay. They are sending the xray off to a top specialist before they decide what to do for her. Poor Lilo. :-(

Well Lilo has laid her eggs. Unfortunately we only have one intact. At the moment it is buried in her substrate. Hoping to obtain an incubator tomorrow. Anyone advise me on temp and humidity horsefield eggs should be incubated at please and if I can't get an incubator tomorrow any advise on where to buy one quickly (no exotic pet shops locally) or how to make one or if a seed propagator would do??
