Hi,

I brought 2 Hermann tortoises (approx a year old). When I brought them I didn't realise about certificates etc.  My question is; Do I need  to have certificates for the tortoises

Hi Tom,

I brought them from a seller in Bognor Regis.. He's been breeding tortoises for years...

Thanks for the reply,

You say a seller - is this a shop ? or did you visit the breeder & see the adults & how they are kept outside ?

Hi Tom,

Yes, I went to the sellers house.  The "Parents" were hibernating... so we didn't see them.  He did show us where they were but I didn't actually see them!

Hello Viv,

Fair enough they're hibernating, out of interest, - where were they ?

To comply with law, the owner needs to supply you with 2 CITES A10 Certificates, selling them without one is a serious offence. There are no exceptions.
You need a copy in order to show that you have purchased them legally.

Let me know how the breeder reacts when you insist on this please. If necessary, I can advise you on the next step.

Hi Tom,

You will need 2 Certs.

If you don't get them - give the seller the phone no. of "Wildlife Licensing" (DEFRA) -

0117 372 8774

If they are refused, the seller will have to give you a refund & a letter stating that they are gifted.

Keep us informed,
Tom

ps the seller should be made aware that without the above options, a criminal record & large fine are likely.
