Overwintering Light Levels
Posted: 10/11/2014 by CubbyWoo

Hi I have a juvenile Hermann tort for the last 4 months so I have decided not to hibernate this year. Shelly has a self ballasted mercury vapour all in one lamp clamped to one side of her wooden tort table (5ft x2ft). Although I think she needs more light levels over the winter period. I have been recommended to try a metal halide lamp in addition. Not sure what this is really? I would need to clamp this to the other side of her tort table. Do you know whether there is such a thing as a self ballasted metal halide lamp and where I can purchase one. Or unless you have any other advice on lighting.....? Thanks.

Hello,

What is the UVB output of the lamp ?
Also is the lamp at a 90 angle when clamped ?

Regards,
Tom

Hi Tom I am not sure how to measure UVB? My lamp is a Powersun 100w. The lamp is not quite 90 degrees

The lamp is fine, try suspending it to get the correct angle, at 30cm above your tort.

No other light needed.

Keep weekly weight records, invaluable when you decide to hibe your tort.
If all goes well, why not try it in Feb/March.
