Hibernation
Posted: 21/10/2014 by D

I have re-homed 2 tortoise both around 40 years old, a spur-thighed and a hermann.  I have used the Jackson graph to weigh them before hibernation and i'm concerned as they are between the average and low graph lines (nearer the low).  I am following your hibernation guide but would like some advice regarding the safety of hibernate due to their weights.

Hello,

The J.R. is just a guide, try putting your figures in the calculator.
Next year keep monthly weight records, these are invaluable.

Re-post if the calculator results are still of concern.

Regards,
Tom

Thanks Tom i'll be sure to keep my own records from now on.

Another question. I've been using hay as bedding as suggested by the previous owner. If I continue to use hay, will they eat this during wind down?

Thanks

D
