urinated and eyes open
Posted: 15/10/2014 by dale_d_h

I have just put my Greek Spur Thigh (Testudo graeca ibera) into hibernation last night.

Into a fridge with the temp set to 5 degress.

Monitored the fridge over the last 2 weeks, temp range 4 to 6.

Withheld food for 35 days

Tortoise size, 204mm

Weight, 1519 grams

About 9 years old

Went into hibernation at 7pm.

I checked him at 5:30am this morning.

He had urinated a large amount, like egg yolk.

And his eyes were open.

The fridge was at just below 6 degrees.

I put him back into the fridge.

Should I take him out and over winter him?

Please help?

Hello,

Is 204mm SLC ?

Where has he been living ?

Re. urine "like egg yolk", can you explain more please ? Re. "a large amount" - a teaspoon full ?

Is the fridge specifically for him ?

Regards,
Tom

Yes, slc

I believe it was not urine, it was mostly urate not urine. A table spoon amount.
It was not gritty at all.

The fridge is just for him(rocket).

I have taken him out, going to bath him a couple of times and try again over the weekend.
I think I rushed the final stage and didn't get him to 10c for long enough before putting him in the fridge.

It is dehydrated, so make sure it drinks well when 'bathed'.

Where has it lived in the last 5weeks ? - also before that if different ?

Where is the fridge situated ?

He lives in a indoor pen. The fridge is in a spare room, it's his fridge.

Just making sure the fridge is not in a garage.

At that age it ought to be living outside, in a 15sqm (min.) enclosure & a waterproof house.

In that situation, they cease feeding towards the end of Sept., thus they are ready to hibe. at the end of October.

Best wishes,
Tom
