Hi all and thank you for such a great site, I have been after getting a tort for awhile now and have decided on a Marginated tort to start with and have a few questions to ask before I do any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance

Can anybody recommend a reputable breeder in Hull really don't want to go to a pet shop and due to lack of transport don't want to use a courier service

Does the outdoor enclosure have to have heating? I am planning on bringing him / her in on a night and can anybody recommend a decent indoor and out door enclosure please

Hello,

If you click "Buying a Tortoise…" then "UK breeders", there is a Yorkshire breeder, 'though not of marginata. Consider the other species, as you simply can't beat buying from a breeder, with a wealth of knowledge.

Very few people are breeding marginata, as there a few adults in the UK. Also whilst 'pretty' when young, they turn black as adults.

Healthy torts are rarely available 'on the doorstep,' will a friend give you a lift ?

Re housing, click on "The Tortoise/.…" for a Caresheet.

Regards,
Tom

thanks for the reply Tom have looked all over in the Hull area the 3 I did find have stopped doing torts and really don't want to buy from a pet shop was disgusted after visiting my local one and finding 2, 5 year old Leopard tors in a 3ft Viv. What breed would you recommend for a starter tort?

In Yorkshire, there is a breeder of Horsfields, they are ok , but only if UK bred. I've also found a breeder in Lincs, so not far from you, of Hermanns & Spur-thighed, which, (if UK bred,) are also a very good choice.

Let me know if you have trouble finding them, by clicking on the "Buying a Tortoise" box on the left.

Re your comments about the pet shop. The best pet shops don't sell pets, there's plenty of money to be made selling pet food & accessories. Those that sell pets are only interested in the profit from them.
Those pet warehouses on out of town sites, encouraging impulse buying of animals, are a disgrace.

Best wishes,

Tom
