Hello Louise,

How old is your tortoise & how long have you had him ?
Can you please describe the environment in which he is living ?

Regards,
Tom

Hi tom I got him in June 2011 I think he is 8 but the person I got him from didn't know he is in a viv on its side filled with soil and play sand unfortunately I was given bad advice when I got him and was told to buy a viv he has a large hide for his bed and the run of our whole house unfortunately he doesn't get outside much unless I can watch him

Do you have weight records Louise ? Also what is the daily temperature regime please ?

Also when you say that you have to watch him outside, (in appropriate weather), is this because you are afraid he could escape ?
No other questions, after your reply to these, I'll try to give some suggestions.

Looks like I have all the info I'm going to get.

In summary -
*Your tort. should be in hibernation from late October to mid March, (as you've had it for 2 years, I assume it's healthy.)
*It is not good husbandry to let it wander round the house.
*I'm happy to advise how to build an escape proof enclosure outside, for summer, & it needs to be at least 15sq metres, with a weatherproof house. If this not possible Louise, then frankly, it would be kind to re-home it with someone who can.

Tom
