Which Species is Most Tame
Posted: 23/09/2013 by Anneka

Hi I am new to keeping tortoises and would like to find out which species is the tamest and can be kept in colonies as I would like to help rehome a few and even foster some. I have 2 acres of garden and the time and effort to help rehome many tortoises, but have been warned off some species as they are more snappy - I really need advise to which species I should be concentrating on. I can provide heated and non heated accommodation. Size is no concern, neither is age - just tameness of the species.

You're not saying which species you've been "warned off." OK a suggestion - it would be good if you concentrated on Horsfields.
Huge quantities are imported & sold at rock bottom prices by animal dealers in pet shops, garden centres, etc.
They are all wild caught, many die before they get here & many more die within 2 years of purchase. Of those that survive many come up for re-homing, having been bought on impulse on 'the cheap,' without proper consideration.
They are 'tame' & you would be doing a great service.
Something to think about.

Tom
