First hiberation Urgent help needed - what should we do?
Posted: 22/09/2013 by chloeday9

Hello,
I am the owner of four 4 year old medditerean spur thighed tortoises and we are struggling to decide if we should hiberate them or overwinter them instead. They all seem to be over the ideal jackson ratio weigh but their shells have gone slightly pyramid shaped so we arent sure they are entirely healthy. We are extremely worried with what to do, as we have asked a few specialists and all have given different responses. Please help!!!!

Hello,
Have you kept weight records? If so, check that they have steadily put on weight. Slight pyramids aren't a problem. Assuming they are kept outside, with a good sized waterproof house, it is normal for the weight to drop a little in September.
It is too early to hibernate them yet. They will steadily empty the 'gut' in the next few weeks & can be hibernated in mid -late October.
As this seems to be your 1st time, I suggest you give them 3 months.
Follow the v. good advice in "The Tortoise" box on the left. It is a natural process.
Regards
Tom
