Hello Leanne,
Just to x check W. & L., may I have the measurements in ft/ins & lb/oz? as there still seems to be an error. Also how long are you intending to hibernate your tortoise?
Regards
Tom

Hi Tom thanks for your reply I took this tortoise on when my aunt died in march .he lives out side in his play pen. I know that she used to hibernate him.and used the lucky reptile fridge/set at 5 degs. He is 61/2 ins in length and he weighs 1 lb. 9ozs.going by what she had put down I think she hibernated him for 3to4.months.not to sure when.so I am trying to find out what to do for the best. As when I was young my dad just put mine in the shed in a box.but I have reading books on tortoise and it seems more complicated than I thought or I am just worried that it may go wrong.

With your measurements Leanne, he is very underweight. I suspect there's still a discrepancy in wt. or lth.. Can you det someone to check them accurately.
Yes many folks used the box in shed method, thanks to "Blue Peter." It lead to thousands of early deaths. Their advice changed totally, following an appearance on the show by Julian Sims.
When I get your measurements, revised if nec., it will be easy to give advice.

Hi Tom we have done as you said using different scales and still weighs the same at 1 pound 9 Ozs. The length was different as we pushed him up to the skirting board on a bit of paper and the end of his shel with pen so I think this was o.k. At 5 1/2 ins.if still under weight could you tell me what to do for best

The inch makes a big difference, Leanne. That's a good weight. I assume it has waterproof box outside, if so you can leave him outside until about the middle of October. His weight will drop a little, as the gut is steadily emptied. With the gut clear of undigested food, it can be safely hibernated.
Click on "The Tortoise" Box on the left, then on the sub-heading "Hibernation" - you have plenty of time to carefully study the info. Be sure to scroll all the way down.
Best wishes
Tom
