Help identifying tortoise
Posted: 19/08/2013 by Eclaire

Hi there,

I am subletting a room in a house here in east anglia for a month this summer, and they have a Tortoise. I have been here two weeks now, and I noticed that the tortoise never gets any food or water!! And he is kept in his small area and never goes outside. That can't be right. I am trying to do some research to find out what this animal needs, then I will give that to the landlady, and if she won't follow through with it then I will ask to take the tortoise with me because this doesn't seem fair. Can you help me figure out what kind of tortoise this is so I know what it needs? I've attached some photos, I can take more if necessary.

Hello,
It looks like a sub-adult Marginated tort. Yes it is not right to keep it indoors. It needs to be outside in a large wooden sided enclosure, with a night shelter. Food should consist of weeds. Give it a long soak in tepid water, when it warms up tomorrow.
There is plenty of info if you click on the green boxes. it is a hardy species & subject to weight, can be hibernated over winter.
Good luck with the owner, let us know what happens.
Regards
Tom
