Trying to get out
Posted: 10/08/2013 by lps1713

Had my Hermann for around 12 months. He is healthy, active,  eats when it suits him and he has a large indoor table top enclosure with stones, water, sleeping quarter. My problem is he keeps pacing up and down and trying to climb the walls to get out. We have an outdoor pen he goes out in when the weather is good, and he tries to get out of that to. Anyone any idea if he is acting normal. We cant give him freedom of the garden yet as he is only 2 years old and a bit small and we have a dog.

Hello,
Can you please state the length of the shell of the tortoise, in a straight line. Also the area of in & outdoor enclosures. This info may help to explain the behaviour. Are the walls of the 'pens' made of wood?
Regards
Tom

Hi Tom, the shell length is 85mm and his indoor enclosure  480mm x 1100mm. His outdoor run is 820mm X 1750mm. The indoor enclosure is made off timber about 6 inches high all around and at the front I have put small clear plastic windows so he can see out. Thanks.

Hello IPS,
Both pens are a good size for a tort of that age. Block off the inside windows, it can see out & therefore tries to get out.
If you go to latest posts, there are a couple of tips there.
I assume that the sides of the outdoor pen are also made of wood. You have a very good set up. Let us know how things develop.
Regards
Tom

Hi Tom, thanks for the response. He seems happy and healthy and he is gaining weight every week.
