Russian Trot Substrate
Posted: 28/07/2013 by Lallies

Hello All, there is so much conflicting advice about the substrate for a Russian tortoise. My one is only 2 years old and I got it 3 days ago. I have a Tortoise table and have decided to use 50/50 top soil and play sand but have now been confused again as to how to keep the substrate after finding on the web sites that say never let it dry out because this will make it dusty and not good for the tort and other sites saying never let it get wet and keep it dry at all times?????? Help please.

Hello B W,
As we discussed on 27/7 the best place for Lal is outside. Re. substrate, why not experiment, keep 1/2 dry & the rest moist. With animal husbandry, there will always be differing opinions. Re. topsoil/sand - garden soil is fine.
Regards
Tom

Thanks again Tom and Lallies is very much enjoying her outside run and indoor table . She has become very friendly and relaxed.
