buying tortoise.
Posted: 16/05/2013 by marie73

Hi, thank you firstly for this site we went a pet shop last week just to see, how bad them two little tortoises were, no water in a Vic and got told don't need hibernating for a horsefield so bad, oh no calcium or hiding place. We didn't buy. Saying that stoke on Trent no tortoises so planning trip to hull. I know it's a breeder but she's selling are not her tortoises off spring although is selling her own but don't want a leopard. I have spent months researching on what to buy, what to look for but is their anything on the cert I should be looking for to trigger alarm bells. We have table 3ft, duo bulb, slate, weeds growing in every spare tub, multi vitamins, cuttlefish and aspen bedding.oh not forgetting thermometer and rock pool. Also have a baby toothbrush and tub for bath time. Just want to make sure this three hundred mile round trip is worth it.

Hello Marie,
It's good to find that you've done the reading before buying & still checking. You refer to a Horsfields at a pet shop, but you don't say which species you are contemplating. I would avoid Horsfields for several reasons - eg sadly they are not regulated. Let us know which species please & we can then discuss the CITES certificates.

Hello Marie, Also I would cautious where someone is breeding one species & is selling other species, not bred by them, as in this case. Let us know how you get on.

Tom

Thankyou Tom,
We would love a hermann or two.. I think I have found a small private breeder, I asked for photos and have received plenty hopefully going this next week to view... But before tortoises arrive need research lighting more. So much different info, but thinking separate lighting but still unsure which bulbs are best.

Hello Marie,
Glad you've found a breeder. Re lighting, the TPG recommends one. The best lighting, of course, is free. Summer is about to begin - is'nt it ?
Best wishes
Tom
