I've made my own tortoise table and was wondering if it was ok to vanish the wood? Or would that upset the tortoise? Help anyone please

The best varnish is supposed to be yacht varnish. I use cuprinol pet safe woodstain and line the base of tortoise tables with pond liner, secured with small wood batons to stop the torts from tearing it.
