How to introduce an indoor tortoise to the outdoors??
Posted: 04/01/2013 by KatieB

I have a spur thighs tortoise who is 6 years old now. He lives in a rabbit hutch with slate, heat lamps and bedding. He has always lived in these conditions. I am wanting to love him outdoors next year and possibly hibernate him.... But I don't have a clue where to start so any advice on this topic would be very much appreciated!! Thank you

He is well overdue for going outdoors, so good luck with this. My own tortoises are out from year one and positively thrive in this way. The thing to remember is that so long as there is somewhere to retreat to in bad weather and somewhere to warm up in periods of low sun, he will be fine. Have a look at some decent outdoor areas here www.tortsmad.com If your tortoise is above 1kg then there is no reason he cannot have the run of the garden with cat flap access to a shed with lamps or similar. All of my adults live this way and so long as the borders are tortoise proof, it gives them the choice they need with sun positioning etc.

Hope this helps
