Hi we've just got our baby tort hes about 2yrs old they said in the shop hes a horsefield. we have him a cage well ventolated but as you say the UV/Heat lamp gets very very hot what wattage lamp shoud we use as we've been sold 100watt

You need to say more about how you are keeping him, size of enclosure, substrate used etc A UV lamp will not get hot, is it a combined uvb/heat lamp? Pet shops give very poor advice generally, so have a look here for HORSFIELD advice www.tortsmad.com/russians.htm They are a burrowoing species, which I doubt the shop told you. If they bought from a reputable source, they would know exact age, so assume possibly wild caught/farmed :(
