Hi
The size of the enclosure will depend on how big your tort is and how much space you have. Could you to measure his plastron (underneath)length as this will help us to give you the best advise.
As for the dried food, avoid at all costs as it is way too high in protein.

Regards

Steph

Hi thanks for the advice with the dried food there is so much mixed advice out there it is difficult to know which way to go!!! Flash measures three and a half inches on his underneath. I am not hibernating him this year as I have been told he is too small, therefore would like to improve on his indoor space now he is not outside during the day as well.

Hi,

Steph is right -- it does depend on how large your tortoise is, but if it is still small then I think the large (at least 120cm long) rabbit/guinea pig cages are excellent. They have a wire framework over the top that is good for hanging lights from and keeping pets out, doors on the top and sides for easy access, and a tray that is deep enough to geet quite a bit of substrate in. I have one, and I've built a ramp up to a second level, to give my tort more exercise (I put half the food up there). Here a link to the sort of thing I mean (I've got the Gallizzi Rodent Cage Mezzo). Sorry it's not live, but you could cut and paste it):

I've just tried to post a photo of my set-up here, and also to post some in an Album, but it's not letting me do either, so I'm sorry, but I'll try and post something later.

Nina
P.S. And definitely no tortoise pellets - they are far too high in protein (you want a high fibre, low protein diet, so weeds and flowers only.

Good luck with the enlosure, and let us see the result! I'm no good at DIY at all, but I had fun building the little ramp and the rail with its elegant moulding (nothing is too good for my Doris {g}). Be sure to get something where you can put a good depth of substrate in.

Hi Nina,  Flash's new home is under construction and is going well.I bought a fantastic indoor cage and stand from pets at home  ( they are on offer there at the moment) It is a NERO 4 DELUX my husband sugested I moved into it as well! The shop assistant looked mightily confused when I said it was for a tortoise, I think she thought I had just walked out of the nearest mental health unit, but she smiled sweetly and loaded it into the back of my car. Thanks again for all your advice   sarah x

Hi Sarah,

LOL -- I'll bet the woman in the shop went home with some funny stories for her family that night. I looked up the Nero 4 Delux and it looks great. Do post some photos when it's fully set up.

Hi Sarah

I went to have a look at the NERO 4 DELUX a couple of weeks ago for my hatchlings or juvenile tortoises.  I didn't buy one, as I'm saving up for my hols later this month Click and drag me down to the editor .  Like your store there was also an offer on.  It is something I will consider purchasing next year though as I did like it.  I wouldn't be too happy about buying the smaller NERO cages though if anyone else is thinking of getting one.

Your tortoise should be very happy in its new home.
