my tortoise has sore eyes
Posted: 22/11/2012 by shannon1

Hi, I got a horse field tortoise about 2 weeks ago.. When I first got him I noticed he kept shutting one eye and rubbing it we rang the pet shop and she told us to just keep batheing it so we did his eyes are getting worse it looks like he has a purple/see throughy bubble over his eye and I think he can't see. Since his eyes have got worse he has been sleeping a lot more and eating less. Please can you help?

You really need to see a decent vet with your tortoise, one who is experienced in tortoises. He may have a simple problem, but it could be something that has been going on for some time. Tortoises take a long time to get ill and just as long to get better, so don't waste any time on this. What have you been bathing him with? What substrate are you keeping him on too? A horsfield is a burrowing species and needs deep soil based substrate. Pellets, sand and very dry substrate can irritiate the eyes, which the tortoise will then rub, setting up infection. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after handling him as pet shop tortoises are imported and can bring all manner of nasties in with them. Bath him daily until you can get him to the vet and keep hydration up in his habitat by watering and not letting it dry out completely.

Hope this helps
