Hello

My name is Rachel, I live in Bishops Stortford, Herts and live with my husband and 2 young children.

I have never kept a tortoise before but I have for many years wanted one.  I would love to re-home a tortoise in need of a loving home.

I would need some handholding to ensure I look after the animal correctly but being a animal lover am sure it's nothing I couldn't learn.  Having spent several years working in a vetinary practice, I'm aware of how much effort is involved in ensuring animals are cared for in the correct manner.

Kind regards,

Rachel

Hi Rachel
Welcome to the site
You've started right by starting here as there's some great people on here
I would only suggest you decide if you want an all year variety or a hibernating type then just look on the left hand side under the tortoise heading and decide what type then read up on the care ,husbandry and feeding side , all the details are there once you feel happy you can do it then go for it !
They can be a handful but they are brilliant
Good luck and hopefully hear from you shortly
Thanks Carl

Hi Rachel, welcome to the site, and a band of fellow enthusiasts!

I have kept tortoises since a young teenager, well over 40 years, they are splendid creatures. Personally I like the idea of hibernating species, as the annual surprise as they wake up each spring really does give owners a buzz. Children share this excitement too and it maintains a long term fascination! For me the wake up is almost better than Christmas.

As for species, I favour Turkish spur thighed, as they darken with age it means they warm up more quickly than pale species, in our climate. If you click on the green box "Tortoise" on the left of this page you will find great info on all things relating to tortoises. Do not be afraid to ask questions, someone will offer help for any issues.

Regards, David nr York.
