I have a tortoise who is six and he hasn't hibernated should I start hibernating him this winter for the full time or for a shorter time to help him settle in.

The conditions generally dictate how long hibernation will be, so I would go for a full two months providing you have wound him down correctly and conditions in the hibernation box are good.
